Spending time with José Perdigão is always a joy. In his day job he is a visionary Dao architect focused on tasteful restoration of important historic buildings, and, in one case, a near extinct village. Walk with him in his vineyards and he turns into a poetic philosopher lovingly effusing over his plants and soil. His wines are as infectious as his personality.

One of many Perdigao design detailsThe quinta was planted in 1997 on granite based soil around 365 meters above the Dao river. Vine density is close to 5000 per acre and vineyards (mainly Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Jaen, and Alfrocheiro with some Encruzado) are run on a sustainable regime that avoids herbicides.

Alfrocheiro very old in this region. And locals are always comparing the characters and advantages of Alfrocheiro versus Touriga and Jaen.

Jose Perdigao calls his single varietal Alfrocheiro ‘his Burgundy.’ He views Alfrochiero as being fundamentally ‘feminine’ in nature, born of ‘the planet Venus’ adding ‘wild, untamed notes’ to his blends. Touriga is more ‘masculine,’ like ‘from the planet Mars,’ bold and muscular. Leaving Jaen a ‘sweet and not very strong personality’ acting as a satellite floating around the two.

On a more practical level, Alfrocheiro is planted on Perdigao’s highest, hottest, most exposed slopes to accelerate ripening, leaving Touriga sited on the most infertile to focus vine energy on fruit rather than growing leaves.

Quinta do Perdigao Alfrocheiro 2008 14.5% Matured in 2-4 year old, neutral French oak, this is textbook Alfrocheiro that suggests why Dao should be taking this grape much more seriously than it is. The wine offers an interesting aromatic mix of red and black fruits with both fresh and dried herbal (mint/pine/straw) high tones. Structured with firm, but fine, front of mouth tannins and refreshing acidity, it is persistent and finely focused, carrying red and black fruit flavors throughout the finish.

Quinta do Perdigao Colheita 2008 14% Primarily a blend of Jaen and Roriz with Touriga Nacional and Alfrocherio in support. Aromas include a touch of smoke, dried and fresh herbs, and savory fruits. Purely fruited, with a tight, clean palate, it’s nicely structured with polished tannins and firm acidity. 7eu locally.

Quinta do Perdigao Encruzado 2010 13.5% This has a purposeful style intent on dressing Encruzado with more complexity beyond its primarily mineral characters. Extended skin contact (48 hours), partial barrel fermentation and battonage have created a highly condensed palate with firm acidity and fine tannins in support. Aromas and flavors range through earthiness, yeast, soy sauce-like saltiness, minerals, tightly packed into a fine body delivering a long tart, salty finish. Sells locally for 7eu

Quinta do Perdigao Reserva 2005 14.5% A 50% blend of Touriga Nacional fleshed out with Jaen, Roriz and Alfrocheiro.  A complex mixture of mint/pine needle florals over mineral and black fruit characters. Wine offers good length and great minerality in the mouth. My one criticism is a touch too much alcohol showing on finish, but on the whole it is well balanced and integrated on the nose and in the mouth.

Quinta do Perdigao Rose Reserva 2010 Created from equal parts Touriga Nacional (pressed from barrels) and free run Alfrocheiro, Jaen and Roriz, this a very classy, complex rose. Smelling intensely of fresh watermelon, it is super smooth and creamy in the mouth ending with dazzling acidity and a meltaway finish. It’s often served up with asparagus and Japanese food. 5eu locally

Quinta do Perdigao Touriga Nacional 2008 14.5% Offering spicy herbal (with airing develops into fresh pine and floral notes), cracked black pepper, black fruit aromas, this is a beautifully balanced wine from start to finish. It’s got it all: lovely juicy black fruits throughout, super smooth powdery tannins, great acidity and superb length.
